The insurance coverage is being evaluated and needs to be assessed by a medical examiner. In Switzerland, since 2007 proton therapy is covered by basic health insurance for the following indications:
- Tumours within in the skull
(chordomas, chondrosarcomas, squamous epthelium carcinomas, adenocarcinomas
and adenocystic carcinomas, lymphoepitheliomas, mucoepidermoid carcinomas,
esthesioneuroblastomas, soft tissue and bone sarcomas, undifferentiated carcinomas,
rare tumours such as paragangliomas).
- Tumours of the brain and the
meninges (grade 1 and 2 gliomas, meningiomas).
- Tumours outside the skull, in
the region of the spine, trunk and extremities (soft tissue and bone sarcoma).
- Paediatric tumours.
Especially those patients, whose tumors can’t be
treated adequately with conventional radiation therapy or whose tumours are located near radio-sensitive
organs or tissues, will immensely profit from ion beam therapy.
Particle therapy is regarded established with the following indications:
More than 300'000 patients have already been treated with particle therapy worldwide - with outstanding results. The knowledge
of which disease and which group of patients will profit of the particle therapy is continuously growing.
Particle therapy is routinely and successfully applied internationally with the following indications:
- Various ENT tumours.
- Lung cancer (localized, central, non-small-cell carcinoma).
- Various mediastinal tumours.
- Left-hand sided breast cancer (with loco regional lymph node metastases).
- Pancreatic carcinoma.
- Hepatocellular carcinoma.
- Various tumours of the pelvis.
- Anal carcinoma.
Protons will be utilized whenever the highest possible precision of dose delivery
is required. This applies to target volumes located very closely to an organ
of risk and/or where surgical intervention is of second choice. This is not related
to special regions of the body.
