Treatment Capacity of the Proton Therapy Center

The proton therapy center will have the capacity to treat 3’000 patients per year provided all treatment rooms are functioning and the clinical workflows have been optimized.
With the expected number of patients eligible for proton therapy from Switzerland (see > Expected number of patients<) it is obvious that a second proton therapy center will be justified in the long term. It is also feasible if one takes into account the expectedly increasing number of indications as a result of worldwide clinical research.

It will further be possible to treat about 1’000 patients per year with conventional radiation therapy. These treatments are primarily intended as adjuvant to protons in mixed treatments.

Until today in Switzerland patients can be treated with proton therapy only at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). According to recent press notes an future capacity of 400 – 500 patients per year is foreseen.

PSI and PTC Zürichobersee can cover most of the future needs for Proton Therapy in Switzerland for now, but definitely the future demand from central and eastern Switzerland.
