The therapy center will offer specialized radiation therapy using proton beams for ambulant patients.
The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen AG is recognized as a worldwide leading research institute and they are especially pioneering in development of clinical applications of proton beams to cure cancer since 1984.
At PTC Zürichobersee it is intended to adopt the essential therapy methods and beam application techniques developed at PSI in a clinical routine situation.
The scientific achievements of PSI will be then introduced into clinical practice at PTC Zürichobersee.
A close scientific and technological collaboration with Paul Scherrer Institute shall secure for the PTC a leading position in technology and methodology of proton therapy.
A Europe wide unique comprehensive program for clinical practice, research and education in Proton Therapy will be feasible.
The therapy center comprises a technically advanced Proton Therapy System with five treatment rooms (four gantries and one fixed beam room), two linear accelerators with high energy photon- and electron beams, imaging systems for tumour diagnostic and localization as well as treatment planning and IT-systems for inter-hospital data communication.
The clinical trials office is planned as a dedicated administration for recording, classifying, reporting and documentation of all proton therapies performed at the PTC, comprising its own dedicated IT platform with telemedical networking capabilities. This is intended to secure the quality of the treatments being embedded in international clinical trials. PTC Zürichobersee though offers perfect conditions and prerequisites for systematic clinical research with prospective trials in - as frequently offered - co-operation with Swiss and international universities.

Besides clinical research and development in the field of radiation therapy with protons, the center will also promote and offer education and training in close cooperation with all partners who have an interest in this advanced radiation therapy.
Training and education of medical and technical staff as well as service personnel will remain as a major concern in the near future.
The training center as part of the entire complex will comprise 8 seminar rooms, administration, cantina and 100 accommodations for trainees. Direct access to the therapy floor is provided.
With that, the conditions are given to resolve the worldwide shortage in qualified clinical and technical staff for proton therapy.
PTC Zürichobersee offers a Europe wide unique combination of proton therapy, clinic hotel and training center.
The clinic hotel offers comfortable accommodation for outpatients and their companions. It is, like the whole facility complex, situated in a very attractive location at the lake Zürichsee with easy access to the beautiful mountains in the heart of Switzerland.
